Swordfern

An immoble plant with long, fern-like fronds that it whips at targets that come within range, supplementing the nutrients it draws from the soil with the spilled blood of its victims.

AC 8 [11], HD 3(15 hp), Att 1d4 fronds (1d6 per frond) THAC0 17 [+2], MV 0', SV D12 W13 P14 B15 S16 (F2), ML 12, AL Neutral, XP 35, NA Nil (1d8), TT U

These large, fern-like plants grow in swamps, rain forests, and jungles, often reaching the height of a man or higher. Each plant has 1d4 fronds that they use to attack targets that come within range (10').

  • Each frond has 4 hp, an AC of 8 [11], and do 1d6 damage per successful hit. Because of the serrated edge of the leaves targets that suffer damage lose an additional 1 hp in the following round due to bleeding.

  • Swordferns blend into the surroundings. If encountered for the first time they surprise on a roll of 1-4 in 6 (1-3 in 6 if accompanied by a woodswise character such as an elf, ranger, druid, etc.).
