ZineMonth24: Jeff Jones and Gary's Appendix

Jeff Jones is no stranger to ZineMonth in specific or Kickstarter in general, having funded a number of successful campaigns (Sabre carries some of his books). Jeff is currently crowdfunding Vol 5 of his zine Gary's Appendix as a part of ZineMonth. It's written for OSE>

Question: Easy question first: Give us the elevator pitch of your project. Tell us about it in two sentences or less.

Answer: Gary’s Appendix draws inspiration from the quirky subject matter we found when reading Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Dungeons Masters Guide. We pack it with evocative (and sometimes esoteric) articles to liven up your favorite version of D&D and each issue provides a fresh look at “standard” monsters.

Q: Is this your first ZineMonth project or have you done it before? If it's your first, talk a bit about what inspired you to give it a shot this year. If you've done it before, what's something you've learned from previous crowdfunding projects that you may be doing differently this time, or, if you're not doing anything differently, talk a bit about your previous projects.

A: This is not my first project. I started a few years ago, and this is my third ZineQuest/ZineMonth and my tenth Kickstarter. What have a learned? Never to be satisfied with the quality of what I am offering. For every project, I improve the look and the content. From a new logo, to the tweaking of fonts, to bringing onboard two new writers—it is always onward and upward.

Q: Finally, tell us something about your current project that really excites you but the average backer may not be aware of. Maybe a twist to an old trope, a new way of presenting something, or maybe just something you've never tried before that you're using this as an opportunity to try out.

A: I love the variety of writers we have. Each person brings a new perspective and their own energy. I don’t tell them what to write; they give me pitches and then run with it. People write about what interests them and that comes through with each article. I write the bestiary section for each issue using the lens of mythology, mass media and some logic to make the mundane creatures, and encounters, interesting.
